D. Anecdote

Fisher, a young man who attends school at the Shady Grove State School in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, is discovering the world of communication through his new NovaChat AAC device that was made possible through the ATR Program. Fisher was introduced to the device during an on-site consultation, and then was provided with a device through MoAT's device loan program. After the trial period was completed, Fisher received his own dedicated communication device through the ATR Program.

When an unfortunate accident left Tony without his adapted vehicle, he was able to turn to Missouri’s Show-Me Loans Program to get it replaced. Born without arms, Tony uses his feet for everything, including driving. A motivational speaker and foot-playing guitar player, being able to get back on the road has kept Tony traveling widely and continue to stay employed.

D. Anecdote

Each year, Missourians save thousands of dollars by accessing one of MoAT’s device re-utilization centers across the state. Nico, who lives in Kansas City, was able to obtain a tilt in space power chair through his local re-utilization center. His wife noted that since he received the device, she has noticed a depression lift from Nico that he has struggled with since he first acquired his disability.

G. Notes:

The sharp decrease in consumers served and items refurbished this year are directly tied to the pandemic. MoAT contracts with primarily IL Centers around the state to perform this service. Since mid-March, the majority of locations have either been closed for prolonged periods of time or have limited consumers entering their facilities. Furthermore, many consumers have greatly reduced their non-essential activities and have forgone seeking refurbished devices as a result.

E. Anecdote

Natalie's support team at the Orchard Farms School District in St. Charles, Missouri, was looking for ways to provide education support. She was struggling to keep up with her peers and participate in class. During an onsite consultation by MoAT, it was determined that Natalie's desire to be independent in the classroom and at lunch caused her difficulties in completing tasks in the time allotted. The time that it took her to independently feed herself kept her out of the classroom. The time it took Natalie to eat plus the time required for a clothes change after lunch would often take her away from her classwork. With the use of the OBI Robotic Feeding System, Natalie is independent at lunch, is able to socialize with her peers without an aid present, and is able to return to class on time.

D. Anecdote

Carol was one of hundreds of Missourians statewide who visited a MoAT Demonstration Center to see, try and learn more about assistive technology. Like many visitors to the demonstration centers, Carol could not believe how many wonderful devices were out there that could help her live more independently. In her case, Carol was looking for a device that could help with the barriers she faced due to macular degeneration. During her visit at the Springfield demonstration location, she received guided exploration of an array of devices and eventually identified the one most appropriate for her.

C. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

A series of AT trainings conducted by Laura Hoffman, MoAT Program Coordinator were held virtually during the latter part of this federal year. This interactive training session had 144 attendees, primarily special educators, who were provided all necessary devices in advance of the training, thus encouraging their active participation during the event which covered an array of relevant topics including switch access/scanning, interfaces, alternative input, mounting, cause and effect apps, AAC apps and literacy apps. The intended impact was to prepare educators with new tools and solutions for students generally underserved by assistive technology in many Missouri schools.

Briefly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

17 high school students with disabilities preparing to graduate were participants in a training covering the need to consider AT in their transition planning. Covered in the training was the initial version of a training guide that staff are preparing for students statewide.

Briefly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

A strand each year at our Power Up Conference is devoted to Information and Communication Technology accessibility. Due to the conference's cancellation, we pivoted to doing on-line training events focused on specific aspects of ICT, such as Word Accessibility, etc.

The pandemic resulted in the cancellation of MoAT's largest training event each year, the Power Up Conference. This, combined with the cancellation/postponement of several other conferences staff were scheduled to participate in (i.e. DESE transition conference, 3 regional brain injury conferences, etc.) significantly impacted this year's overall training numbers.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

The Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Developmental Disabilities sought out the guidance of Missouri Assistive Technology on the development of a pilot program to incorporate greater use of assistive technology by employment providers statewide. Related activities included working directly with employment providers on assessing the assistive technology needs of employees with developmental disabilities, investigating agency needs to increase assistive incorporation, training on various AT devices and apps and the initial work on an AT and Employment guide for employment providers.

Breifly describe one technical assistance activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

MoAT staff have been working with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to develop materials and training focused on the need to consider assistive technology as part of the post-high school transition process. In addition, MoAT continues to work with the state's Money Follows the Person Program on identifying and securing assistive devices and durable medical equipment for individuals transitioning from a nursing home to community living.

Public Awareness Activities

Public Awareness Narratives

Describe in detail at least one and no more than two innovative or high-impact public awareness activities conducted during this reporting period. Highlight the content/focus of the awareness information shared, the mechanism used to disseminate or communicate the awareness information, the numbers and/or types of individuals reached, and positive outcomes resulting from the activity. If quantative numbers are available regarding the reach of the activity, please provide those: however, quantative data is not required.

1. A weekly e-news letter was launched this year which highlights AT devices (selection of which is based on frequently asked questions/device loan usage and/or themes), additions to AT loan library, educational videos and program updates. The newsletter is distributed widely to educators, agencies, consumers and other interested parties and averages around 655 opens per edition. New borrowers out of the loan program, new connections with current programs and greater awareness of AT options are among the noted outcomes of this activity.
