D. Anecdote

A family inquired about the INDATA Alternative Financing Program to purchase an accessible mini-van to assist with the transportation needs of their daughter who is wheelchair dependent. After receiving help with the loan process, the the family borrowed $34,000 to purchase a mini-van capable of transporting their daughter's wheelchair. The family is excited to more fully engage in their community with the help of their new vehicle.

Impact Area

A family borrowed $600 to purchase an iPad for their son who has Spina-Bifida and Arnold Chairi Malformation. The purpose for the iPad is to help facilitate communication between the son, his family and friends. The family is excited for the improved communication this device will provide to help better understand their son’s needs.

D. Anecdote

A woman with low vision and social anxiety was referred to the INDATA reuse program by her social worker. The woman had been attending graduate school, but quit because she was unable to perform the required work. A laptop computer with built-in accessibility features and a list of free college resources were given to the woman to help her return to school and fully participate in her classes. The woman was extremely grateful to receive the laptop and is looking forward to getting back into school soon.

E. Anecdote

A man with low vision contacted the INDATA Loan Library looking for a magnification device that could be positioned at a 45-degree angle for reading music. He worked as a professor and musician, but in recent years has struggled to read printed materials. He was able to borrow several video magnifiers including the Ruby, Pebble, and Amigo devices and, after working with the devices for a few weeks, found the Amigo best fit his need. Ironically, an Amigo Handheld magnifier had recently been donated to the INDATA reuse program and was available for redistribution. The man is extremely happy to read music again.

D. Anecdote

A man with a spinal cord injury contacted INDATA to learn more about the Amazon Echo device he recently purchased. He was provided a demonstration of the device and was surprised by the information he could access and the greater independence the speaker provided him while at home. He was specifically excited to learn about the calling feature of the device as it allows him to communicate with his spouse while they are away from each other.

C. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on Innovative Assistive Technology was held in February with 140 attendees. Participants were provided with an in-depth look at the many uses of innovative technologies that are helping persons with disabilities lead more independent lives. Technology discussed included the internet of things, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and assistive robots.

Briefly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on Windows, Mac and Chrome computers was held in June with 146 attendees. With many students attending school from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participants were provided with an in-depth look at the built-in accessibility features that are readily available on mainstream computers as they work to engage with their online learning.

Briefly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

A Web Accessibility Training for Developers was held in May and provided an overview of disability, assistive technology, and accessibility law and guidelines. Participants learned techniques for designing, developing and testing accessible websites including basic content, structure, images, forms, tables, CSS and ARIA.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

INDATA is assisting an assistive technology developer called Ablelink to help a group of individuals currently using the paratransit system in Indianapolis, but are interested in being more independent by learning to utilize the fixed-route bus system. Staff are using the Wayfinders smart phone app to provide context, prompting, and reminders related to riding the fixed-route bus lines. As of this writing, twelve persons have been trained and another eight are scheduled for early 2021.

1. The INDATA Project produces three widely distributed and popular podcasts, Assistive Technology Update, Assistive Technology Frequently Asked Questions, and Accessibility Minute. These shows have a highly engaged audience in over 160 countries. In 2020 ATUpdate was recognized by Feedspot.com as the #1 AT Podcast in the world. Additionally, the INDATA YouTube Channel has 2800+ subscribers and features 600+ "Tech Tip" videos that have been viewed over 1.1 million times.
