D. Anecdote

Riding a bike was a long-time dream for a 12 year-old girl with cerebral palsy. She uses a wheelchair to get around, but wanted to be like other 12 year olds and ride a bike. She is very limited to what she can do outdoors although she loves being outdoors. Her mom checked the SC Assistive Technology Exchange website every day to see if someone posted an adapted bike on the website. Realizing that an adapted bike is not that common, she called the staff at the SC Assistive Technology Program. An adapted bike was found by SCATP staff. The first day the girl got the bike, she rode for 2 hours! She said "It's so awesome!" The smile on her face was priceless. She now feels like any other 12 year old with her bike. This bike will help her legs get stronger and she can enjoy being outdoors. The family plans to take the bike with them on their next vacation.

E. Anecdote

An AT team leader borrowed eye gaze access communication equipment from SC Assistive Technology Program to trial with a student. These trials were critical in helping the AT team determine the best fit for the student during school and for transitioning to life after high school. Due to positive outcomes, the equipment was purchased. The student uses her new device to successfully communicate with her friends, family, and teachers. Her academic performance has improved and she is considering college for the first time.
