D. Anecdote

A truck driver in danger of losing his job because we was unable to pass a mandatory hearing test was able to secure funding to purchase hearing aids. He has since been able to pass the hearing test and retain his job.

Impact Area

A young woman with a visual impairment was able to secure funding to purchase a smartphone to assist with activities of daily living. She often struggled to identify products at the store, read printed materials and maintain her calendar, email and much more. She is now able to do all these activities using the smartphone's built-in screenreader (VoiceOver) and a free app (Seeing AI).

D. Anecdote

A student with a mobility impairment was provided a laptop computer from the INDATA Depot. The student recently graduated with Honors from Ivy Tech Community College and was looking for full-time employment. The laptop computer is assisting with job development activities by allowing the student to be more engaged and responsive as he contacts and hears from potential employers.

E. Anecdote

A woman with C5-C6 quadriplegia was able to borrow several computer input devices including adaptive keyboards, mice, and voice-input software. She is working to become more proficient with her computer skills while she looks for employment opportunities in the are of office management.

D. Anecdote

A mom and her son came to INDATA to learn more about reading and writing tools. Her son has significant challenges in these areas and they resulted in him losing several jobs over the years. During their visit a demonstration of various apps (SeeingAI, ClaroPDF, built-in speech recognition, dragon, etc.) was provided to offer assistance in these areas. They left the appointment excited and hopeful about the possibilities these new tools could offer her son both at work and in life.

B. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on Creating Tech Solutions in minutes was held in August 2019. Participants learned how to take every day items and create low-tech assistive technology devices for individuals who have physical, visual, hearing or cognitive disabilities.

Breifly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on Job Accommodations was held in February 2019. The training was geared for high school students who were transitioning to the workplace and covered valuable topics including reasonable accommodations, hiccups and glitches in the accommodation process and a discussion panel consisting of persons with disabilities, employers and HR professionals talking about their experiences in the workplace.

Breifly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

A Web Accessibility for Developers webinar was held in May 2019 and provided participants with an overview of disability, accessibility guidelines and ICT law. Participants learned techniques for designing, developing and testing accessible websites including basic content, structure, images, forms, tables, CSS and ARIA.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

The INDATA project facilitated a capstone project with an Indiana University Human Computer Interaction course and the Indianapolis Children's Museum. The purpose of the project was to assist the museum in creating accessible social stories for their website. These stories model appropriate interaction and describe relevant social cues based on different exhibits and areas of the museum.

1. The INDATA Project produces 3 popular and widely distributed podcasts (ATUpdate, ATFAQ and Accessibility Minute). The focus of the podcasts is to share industry news, information on accessibility topics and to answer people's assistive technology questions. The podcasts have a highly engaged audience, and our listenership come from over 160 countries. INDATA podcasts were recognized in Feedspots Top 10 Assistive Technology Podcasts on the web (ATUpdate #1, ATFAQ #6, and AccessibilityMinute #9).

2. The INDATA Project produces a weekly TechTip Youtube video that provides awareness of the various assistive technology devices available today. Each video provides information on what the device is, how it works and where it can be found. The INDATA YouTube channel has over 2200 subscribers and a library of over 500 videos.
