D. Anecdote

A man with paraplegia resulting from an automobile accident was able to purchase an accessible truck to improve his independence and start looking for employment. He was able to borrow the needed funds to purchase a truck and currently enjoys his independence as he navigates his community and pursues employment opportunities.

Impact Area

A man with bi-lateral lower extremity amputation, who needed specialized controls for his vehicle, was referred to our AFP program after his current vehicle did not meet used vehicle inspection guidelines specified by another provider. The man was able to borrow the necessary funds through the AFP to purchase a newer vehicle and return to the other provider to receive the specialized controls. With his new vehicle and controls the man no longer relies on family members for transportation and enjoys his new found independence.

D. Anecdote

A woman with low vision contacted the INDATA Depot looking for a device to assist with reading her mail. A reutilized Sara CE scan/read device was recently donated and available for distribution. The Sara was setup in the woman’s home and after some initial training she is now able to read her mail and other printed materials in her home.

E. Anecdote

A communication device was borrowed from the INDATA Equipment Loan Library by a husband wanting to communicate with his wife. His wife recently suffered a stroke making it difficult for her to communicate and express her needs. The borrowed device served as a temporary solution while they worked with a speech therapist and waited on insurance to purchase a permanent solution.

D. Anecdote

A man with quadriplegia contacted the INDATA Loan Library requesting a demonstration of IoT environmental controls including Amazon Echo and Google Home. His interest was to improve his independence around the home and to communicate more effectively with his family and caretakers. The client was excited to learn about these technologies and is currently exploring options for purchasing and implementing them into his home environment.

B. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable technologies was held in August 2018 with 133 attendees. Participants learned about the many uses of Intelligent Personal Assistants, the development IoT of skills, routines and actions, IoT health related devices, and wearable technologies and devices.

Breifly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

A full-day training focused on Assistive Technology and Aging was held in March 2018 with 150 attendees. Participants learned about accommodations and resources for aging in place, home modifications, safe driving, and assistive technology,

Breifly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

A Web Accessibility for Developers full-day webinar provided participants with an overview of disability, accessibility guidelines, and law. Participants learned techniques for designing, developing and testing accessible websites including basic content, structure, images, forms, tables, CSS and ARIA.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

Brian Norton represents the INDATA Project on the Comcast NBCUniversal Assistive Technology Grant Fund. The focus of the grant is to develop a brain injury support group focused on assistive technology and educational supports. The group offers attendees tools and tips for using technology to assist with everyday tasks, effective ways to use smart devices, a safe environment to practice what is learned, and an on-line community that provides peer support from technology professionals and others with brain injuries.

1. The INDATA Project produces three widely distributed and popular podcasts, Assistive Technology Update, Assistive Technology Frequently Asked Questions, and Accessibility Minute. These shows have a highly engaged audience in over 160 countries. A keyword search in iTunes of "assistive" lists two of our shows in the top 5 results (Assistive Technology Update is listed as number 1 and ATFAQ is listed as number 3 worldwide). The INDATA project has created over 450 "Tech Tip" videos on YouTube that have been viewed over 750,000 times.

2. The INDATA project produces a series of downloadable information sheets focused on specific categories of assistive technology or related topics. Topics this past year include Internet of Things, Note-Taking devices, and Employee Resource Groups.
