D. Anecdote

A family attending a statewide AT camp located on the campus for the state school for students who are deaf and/or blind. They discovered their son responded very well to the use of a light box. He was able to see letters and shapes in a way he never could before. The family planned to borrow a device from the state AT program while they searched for one of their own. A representative from the camp heard of their interest and appeared the following day with a light box that had been donated to the school and was not in use.

E. Anecdote

A five foot suitcase ramp was loaned to an individual with MS. She was able to use it to access the home of her friends and begin being social again. For years her husband carried her into inaccessible homes of friends and family, she expressed feeling a sense of embarrassment at the situation. Having the opportunity to roll in on her own, gave her a sense of independence and pride.

D. Anecdote

A consumer using hearing aids was looking for a device to provide additional amplification during her upcoming vacation, which included guided tours. After receiving a demonstration of a variety of assisted listening devices, she decided to borrow a model that could be paired with her hearing aids to provide the additional amplification needed.

B. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

Discussed how people with disabilities can prepare for emergency situations and how to gain access to AT devices/services during recovery. Participants gained additional information on low-tech devices and temporary AT solutions to meet current needs.

Breifly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

Training was provided to regional educators regarding the uses and benefits of text-to-speech software. During this training, educators were provided information to help them assess a variety of text-to-speech tools and select tools that would allow students to transition to multiple environments with those tools.

Breifly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

Provided a hands-on training to professionals demonstrating how to make PowerPoint presentations accessible. The training format allowed participants to work alongside the presenters (veteran AT staff) to demonstrate their new skills and receive assistance as needed. This training led to a change in policy; now all staff at West Virginia's UCEDD are required to complete accessibility training.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

WVATS is working with the WV Department of Education to establish curriculum and training guidelines for special educators and support staff throughout the state. Thus far, WVATS has reviewed training agendas and assisted in creating training videos. This is an ongoing project.

Breifly describe one technical assistance activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

WVATS is working closely with the WV Birth to Three program, as the Department of Education, to provide assistance in increasing assistive technology knowledge to parents of children with significant disabilities as they prepare to transition their children from B-3 to public school. WVATS is assisting in the creation of training videos and print materials. This is an ongoing activity.

1. WVATS produces quarterly newsletters that go out as print copies, through listservs, and are available online. The summer newsletter focused on assistive technology for dementia and aging. After the edition was released, a variety of support groups from around the state contacted WVATS to request a representative come out and speak to their groups. These groups included support groups for Parkinson's Disease, traumatic brain injury, and other groups.
