With the support of vocation rehabilitation he was able to combine VR services and an mPower Loan to buy a vehicle that would accommodation his disability and enable him to be independent driving to school. Independent transportation is essential in Maine as there is not public transit service in the area where this man lives and attends college. His goal is to complete college studies, get an on the job internship experience and eventually work full time.

E. Anecdote

A group home personal support provider contacted CARES to inquire about borrowing hearing amplification devices for a woman with the intellectual disability who is hard of hearing. We loaned out three amplifier devices over several months for her to try out in her home environment. She also had some sensory issues and could not tolerate the feel of the devices near her ears. This eliminated several devices. After trying different devices, she found a pair that worked for her with the right amplifier. Now she is awaiting funding through medicaid waiver to purchase the AT device that best suits her need. With the new device she will be more able to interact with her support staff, family and others living in her home.

D. Anecdote

A home care worker contacted Pine Tree Society Communication Pathway program for a demo of a communication device prior to a device being acquired for a young man. This man had been an AAC user since childhood and is now 32 years old. His current device is broken, obsolete and unrepairable. He wanted to learn about the newer tech and see what his options were. Out staff met with this man and his caregivers to show several AAC device options, he tried them out and was able to decide on which device he wanted to get. From there, he could work with his speech path to get the documentation needed for funding of his new AAC device.

B. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

The Maine CITE staff created a webinar geared for community case managers on the topic of "AT for Managing Medications". We worked with the state association of community service providers to promote the availability of this webinar. As a follow up to this webinar event, we were invited to do a live workshop at the DHHS state meeting on AT for Community Living with more that 60 attendees at the training workshop.

Breifly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

The Maine CITE staff worked with the State VR Agency to plan and present a webinar training event to their 27 statewide High School Transition VR counsellors. We presented information about AT devices that impact transition skills development for students with disabilities who are moving on to living independently or going on to post secondary school and/or work. Resources were included in the webinar about state wide AT providers, Medicaid waivers that include AT as well as other alternative funding sources.

Breifly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

Maine CITE staff presented a workshop to the regional Word Press group on "Web Accessibility and Word Press". The session highlighted disability data, regulatory standards, how to make content accessible, the importance of developing for mobile devices and the session offered ICT resources including mainecite.org/accessible-web-design/

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

This year, the Maine CITE staff worked with our four AT Demo & Loan statewide service provider agencies. The TA project involved working with them to update their individual AT device inventories and merge them into one central inventory on a new website -- www.at4maine.org. Over 8 months we work with these AT professionals to purge old AT, identify new AT to be purchased and update the inventories. Next on our agenda is to work with them for promoting info about the new site and drive consumer traffic to this new AT online resource.

Breifly describe one technical assistance activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

Maine CITE continues to be a collaborative stakeholder in the State Money Follows the Person program administered through the DHHS. The "Homeward Bound Program" assists individuals who are in nursing homes to create transition plans and move back into their community. Over 3 years more than 110 people have been served by the program and transitioned back home. This year we worked with the state staff to analyze these individual's transition plans and use of AT --- more than 90% of them used some type of AT to return to the community. This program is set for continued funding through 2018 and we will continue in a TA role for the staff

C. Notes:

Public Awareness

Public Awareness Narratives

Describe in detail at least one and no more than two innovative or high-impact public awareness activities conducted during this reporting period. Highlight the content/focus of the awareness information shared, the mechanism used to disseminate or communicate the awareness information, the numbers and/or types of individuals reached, and positive outcomes resulting from the activity. If quantative numbers are available regarding the reach of the activity, please provide those: however, quantative data is not required.

1. This year, Maine CITE purchased advertising space in the "Wiser Living" magazine published in Maine and geared to the boomer/aging market. It was a full page info ad in a 130 page magazine that promoted information about Maine CITE and Assistive Technology. It had pictures of AT and gave examples of AT used for staying active in the community and living at home safer and more independently. We also promoted our AT information website and getatstuf.com for AT exchanges. This magazine is published 4 times a year and is dropped at no charge in southern Maine at the agencies on aging, doctors offices, health clinics, libraries, senior colleges and other public locations. The magazine circulation is 150,000.
