D. Anecdote

A gentleman was referred to INDATA and received an AFP loan to purchase the eSight Eyewear. The gentleman was able to purchase the eSight Eyewear and was excited to begin using the device in many aspects of his daily living like reading, using the computer and talking with his friends.

Impact Area

A woman with Multiple Sclerosis was referred to INDATA for an AFP loan to replace the lift in her accessible van. Her van was essential for maintaining independence in her daily activities and the new lift allowed her to transport her scooter freely while out in the community.

D. Anecdote

A gentleman was very excited when the re-use computer he had requested was delivered and setup for him during a recent distribution trip to Ft. Wayne. The gentleman wanted to use the computer so he could better communicate with family and friends. During the setup process the man received some basic training and was directed to several free on-line tutorials and college level courses to jumpstart his learning.

E. Anecdote

A gentleman called the INDATA lending library requesting a short-term loan for a SARA CE reading machine so his device could be sent back into the manufacturer for repair. He was excited to receive the loaned device so he could continue his daily routine and normal reading activities.

D. Anecdote

A gentleman requested a demonstration of a handheld video magnifier. He had been struggling to read printed materials with the small glass magnifier he purchased at a local pharmacy and was hopeful that a video magnifier would improve his overall reading speed. During the demonstration he was able to try several handheld magnifiers and was astonished with the difference a handheld video magnifier was able to make.

B. Description of Training Activities

Describe innovative one high-impact assistance training activity conducted during the reporting period:

The INDATA project held an AT and Autism full-day training where participants learned about assistive technology solutions for persons with Autism. AT Solutions for sensory needs, social skills, coping skills, video modeling and communication were discussed and demonstrated by experts in those areas.

Breifly describe one training activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

The INDATA project held an AT for Student's Transitioning from HS to College full-day training. Participants learned about key topics including IEP transition planning, making accommodation requests in higher education, and the understanding the different support systems in high school and higher education. Additionally, AT solutions for reading, writing and arithmetic were discussed and demonstrated during the training.

Breifly describe one training activity related to Information and Communication Technology accessibility:

A Web Accessibility for Developers full-day webinar provided participants with an overview of disability and accessibility guidelines and law. Participants learned techniques for designing, developing, and testing accessible websites including basic content structure, images, forms, tables, CSS, and ARIA.

B. Description of Technical Assistance

Describe Innovative one high-impact assistance activity that is not related to transition:

Wade Wingler represents the INDATA Project on the Indianapolis Childrens Museums’ accessibility committee. This group of local and national experts has been working to increase accessibility of the museum. Areas of focus for this group include overall facility accessibility, exhibit accessibility, and how individuals with sensory challenges might experience the museum on the most accessible way possible. The museum plans to take feedback and recommendations for this group into future accessibility plans.

Breifly describe one technical assistance activity related to transition conducted during the reporting period:

Brian Norton represents the INDATA Project on the Ball Venture Fund Grant at Butler University. The grant is to research methods for making on-line mathematics accessible to people who are blind and visually impaired. Areas of focus include the identification, evaluation and testing of adaptive software and hardware tools. Butler University plans to use the findings of this grant to provide math courses on-line.

1. The INDATA Project produces three widely distributed and popular podcasts, Assistive Technology Update, Assistive Technology Frequently Asked Questions, and Accessibility Minute. These shows have highly engaged audience in over 160 countries. A keyword search in iTunes of “assistive” lists two our shows in the top ten results (Assistive Technology Update is listed as number 1 and ATFAQ is listed as number 5 world-wide). The INDATA project has created over 400 “Tech Tip” videos on YouTube that have been viewed over 500,000 times.

2. Based on market research from organizations with similar outreach strategies the INDATA Project is piloting a series of downloadable information sheets focused on specific categories on assistive technology. Initial targeted topics include Internet of Things, Note-taking Devices, Shopping in the Community. This initiative will be monitored and re-evaluated in the upcoming project year.
